You are probably already aware that a domain name is the URL your type in a browser to visit a website. So, what exactly is a domain, in the context of networking?

A domain typically means a group of users and computers; as well as other hardware that is within this group like a printer or even a database server. As long as they all share their data resources via the same network.

A domain will have a domain controller that will take over all the domain functions and network security. In this way, a domain is used to manage all user actions, including their username and passwords. Also, any shared resources including their right to access.

At Tentacle’s HQ in Glasgow, the biggest advantage of domains is the ease of controlling all our computers at once. Without a domain, our IT staff would have to individually manage every computer. Without a domain, any other option would not be scalable and would become unmanageable.
