Uptime

When it comes to Cloud Servers, you will most probably have been presented with Uptime and Downtime metrics. So, what exactly are these two terms?

Uptime is, as you may expect, the amount of time that a service has remained operational; or up.

Downtime is therefore the amount of time that a service has experienced disruptions to its service.

Typically, in a downtime, the day to day operations of your systems will be rendered unavailable. So that’s not good news for your company!

Before we delve into all things to do with downtime, it’s worth exploring why we even have a concept of uptime. After all, our Cloud Servers should always be UP! The Glasgow based server professionals at Tentacle may use uptime to indicate the total consecutive amount of operational time. This is important as we would need a metric to define the length of time your systems may be running.

So, what causes downtime? Typically, the unavailability of your system or the Cloud’s network may cause this. Again, several reasons can define these for instance, it could be due to any unplanned events which may occur from some kind of a software crash. Also, it can be caused by network outages.

It should be noted that planned events like maintenance routines can also lead to downtimes.

Uptime and Downtime are critical for determining the success level of the real-time services of your system. After all, your business relies on your systems to work. These terms, therefore, can help us quantify the success value of your systems.
